At the gates to the Orne to the East, the Pays d'Ouche offers plenty of bucolic charm and the stimulating presence of water. Numerous picturesque villages are dotted amongst these peaceful plains: Saint Evroult Notre Dame du Bois and the romantic ruins of the former abbey, Saint Ouen sur Iton and its twisted chimneys, and Moulin la Marche for its famous horse races at the Jean Gabin hippodrome. This area retains traces of its past in metallurgy, such as the Grosse Forge d'Aube ironworks and the Bohin factory that perpetuate this unique savoir-faire. L'Aigle is not to be missed with its brick-and-flint houses and its large market. A place to breathe or a place to inspire, the Pays d'Ouche was formerly the retreat of the Comtesse de Ségur and Jean de la Varende, who came here to write.
